Chris Foss Sci-Fi Art and Illustrations

Travelling Cities by Chris Foss (cover for the book “Diary of a Spaceperson”, 1990)

Travelling Cities, by Chris Foss (used as a cover for the book Diary of a Spaceperson, 1990).

Christopher Foss is a British illustrator and science fiction artist, best known for his sci-fi book covers. Since the 1970s, he has been one of the world’s leading sci-fi artists, and had a huge influence on his artist peers, as well as filmmakers. Chris Foss has created over a thousand book cover artworks for world-famous authors such as Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, E. E. 'Doc' Smith, Arthur C. Clarke, A. E. Van Vogt, Philip K. Dick, Jack Vance, and many others. Foss’s evocative sci-fi book covers pioneered a much-imitated style featuring vast, colourful spaceships, machines and cities, often marked with mysterious symbols. Human figures are usually absent. These images are suggestive of science fiction in general rather than depictions of specific scenes from books, as not being a fan of science fiction, Foss typically did not read the books he illustrated, preferring to paint scenes entirely from his imagination. He has also worked in film design on Dune, Superman, Alien, Flash Gordon, Stanley Kubrick’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy released in 2014. For more information check out the Chris Foss’s official website. Below is a limited selection of his paintings, for more artworks please see art books.

great pics! Some even resemble modern day machines like the NMSS-3. It looks like present day Ticonderoga class destroyers of the US Navy.

Chris Foss is among my favorite Sci-fi artists. His work is vivid and unique. I especially like the colors and a sense of scale and vastness one often senses in many of his paintings.

He and Peter Elson inspired a lot of contemporary computer game artists. Their influence is especially visible in games like Home World and Wipe Out.

Beautiful and inspirational work!

Chris Foss ha sido toda una inspiración en mi juventud (años 80).
Lo he recordado a través de una cita que he oido sobre "Erase una vez el espacio" (otra que tal baila), cuyas naves siempre me han parecido basadas o creadas por él.
